Monday 28^th January

This week we are studying the traditional story of ‘The Elves and the Shoe maker’ in two different formats. On Friday you will be writing a news report on the mysterious visitors who keep making shoes for the elderly shop owners. You will be able to find a version of the story on you tube if you don’t have a copy of the story.

For your TALK homework this week you should discuss:

-the 5Ws about the elves and the shoe makers – Who are they? When did it happen? What happened? Why did it happen? Where did it happen?

-the appearance and personalities of the characters

-description of the shop and clothes

-who you will interview as part of the report? (eyewitnesses)

-how you will sum up? What do you think will happen?

-possible headlines for the newspaper article.

As usual, the more talk the better!  You can make notes if you wish.  Enjoy talking about this favourite classic!

Important Reminders

* Money for Caerphilly Castle trip is now due in.
* There are still some HWB permission slips that haven't been returned.
* Dosbarth Coala and Cangarw Wedding is on Monday 2nd February and Taffs Well Church you are welcome to join us for this exciting event.
* Caerphilly Castle Trip - Wednesday 4th February.  The children will need to wear school uniform, sensible footwear and a warm waterproof coat.  They will also need to bring a packed lunch and no more that £5 to spend in the shop.

What have we been up to this week?

The children have been learning how to write newspaper articles about the devastating spell that Maleficent cast upon Sleeping Beauty. What fantastic finished pieces we had during or Big Write session on Friday. They had catchy headlines, reports that contained the 5WS and eyewitness accounts.

We have also been learning to idenitfy and describe the properties of 3D shapes and classify them in different ways.

To end the week the children decided to present their work on Life in a Castle as a news report.  They filming has been done now all that is left is to edit it using the Green Room app.  We all thoroughly enjoyed and i Think we have some budding reporters amongst us!!!

Sleeping Beauty – Traditional Story

or by curling up with a book you have at home.

On Friday the children will be writing a newspaper article based on the princess being put to sleep. Please can you discuss this week:

We’re going to the Church and we’re going to get married!!!!!!

On Monday 2^nd February we are going to Taffs Well Church where we will be role playing a wedding ceremony with Reverend Su.  The children will be able to dress up (details to follow once the children have decided who they want to be) and participate in the ceremony.  The wedding will be at 1.30 pm and you are welcome to join us if you can. The children will be writing their own personal invitations for their wedding but we thought we would write and let you know in advance.

Life in Dosbarth Coala so Far!

What a fantastic week we have had in Dosbarth Coala!

The children have settled back after Christmas superbly

and have set to work straight away.  We received a 

message of Monday from King Matholwch from the 

traditional Welsh story Branwen.  He has asked for our

help!  We have to hold a healthy banquet for all the 

characters from traditional tales so they can all resolve 

their problems and finally live in harmony.

 

Here we are working in groups to complete our KWL grids

on what we wanted to learn this term during our new topic

'Tales and Castles'.

 

 

 

As part of our new topic 'Tales and Castles' we decided we wanted to find out about the different features of a castle so we set to work using two Internet sites and lots of books to find out many interesting facts. Some choose to record their notes in table, others drew their own spider diagram and some even produced a detailed fact file!!! We are now in the middle of using these facts to write our own non-chronological reports!!!

 

 

Our P4C session this week was based on the story of Branwn and the question the children wanted to discuss was 'Should Branwen have married someone she didn't love?' Here we are talking about the ideas in the story, creating the questions, voting or our favourite and discussing our chosen question.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

And last but not least Mrs Howells has let us design and make our own castle role play area and what fun we had on Friday!!! Enjoy the pictures below.

 

Big Talk Homework - Monday 12th January

On Friday we will be writing a poem called ‘Ten Things found within in a Castle’s Walls’.  Please could you spend this week talking about the different parts of a castle and their functions. This week in school the children have been busy researching the different parts of a castle so they may impress you. 

I have included a poem called ‘Ten Things Found in a Shipwrecked Pirate’s Pocket’ for you to read to see what we are aiming for.  While you are discussing the different parts of a castle try and encourage them to think of adjectives to describe that feature also.
