Theme: Fun at the Fair

This project has a science focus and teaches children about different animals, their life cycles and what they need to stay alive and well.

Language, Literacy & Communication Skills
  ü  Wanted/Missing posters for animals.
ü  Listen to stories involving stories e.g. The Sheep Pig, Zoo (Anthony Brown), Farmer Duck or watch films: Babe, Two Brothers, Incredible Journey, RSPCA film: Life of a Hamster, Over The Hedge, Happy Feet and Madagascar.
ü  Stories with familiar settings - e.g. write a story from an animal’s perspective.
ü  Pupils create a booklet related to the theme of animals.
ü  Pupils create a poster about a missing animal.
ü  Pupils read and compare stories by the same author i.e. Dick King Smith.
ü  Fortune Lines- Plot characters’ feelings within stories.
ü  Instructional Writing – how to look after/care for an animal or pet.
ü  Letter Writing to Mr Park describing the farm they have created.
ü  Write a non-chronological report about an animal or zoos.
ü  Hot Seating characters from stories.
ü  Interviews.
ü  Drama – Freeze frames of particular scenes from stories.
ü  Role play different roles such as farmer, zoo keeper, animal carer, vet, visitors etc.

Personal & Social Development, Well-Being & Cultural Diversity
ü  Discuss why animals are important to us and how we should look after them.
ü  Understand the need for hygiene (washing of hands and shoes) with animals and visiting animal centres.
ü  Visit a local pet shop or pet centre to see a range of animals.
ü  Care for a class pet.
ü  Use circle time to discuss the ideas of farms. 
ü  Explore the festivals of Harvest and Succoth.
ü  Investigate the RSPCA and the role they play in protecting innocent animals.

Mathematical Development
ü  Solve counting and sorting problems on the theme of animals using mathematical language to explain their ideas and working.
ü  Solve simple mathematical problems using animals as a theme. Sort by number of legs, type of habitat, classification of animal and other ways of sorting. Make pictorial representation of the groups made.
ü  Range: Doubling, Halving, Counting on and back in 1s, 10s, 5s, 2D Shapes. 
* Constructing and Interpreting block graphs and pictographs.
Creative Development
ü  Develop drawing and painting skills using a range of art materials to draw and paint animals from direct observation and memory.
ü  Sing and compose their own songs about animals.
ü  Create dances, movements and sequences to music to show different types of animals based on the story ‘The Rainbow Fish’.
ü  Make models of animals.
ü  Weave with wool and contribute to a class project on a Welsh artist.

Knowledge & Understanding of the World
ü  Make a simple map or plan of their farm or places visited or fictional places e.g. Old MacDonald’s Farm.
ü  Use maps and globes to see where animals come from.
ü  Learn about the life cycles of different farm animals and explore the farming cycle.
ü  Learn where wool, milk, leather come from and sequence the process.
ü  Explore how different materials change when heated e.g. eggs, bread etc.
ü  Listen to stories which explain how animals have been used throughout history for different purposes.

Welsh Language Development
ü  Children hot seat and role play characters from Welsh books e.g. Y meddyg,
ü  Learn the different names of farm animals in welsh – Beth sy ar y fferm?
ü  Learn the language patterns: Ble rwyt ti’n byw? Faint ydy dy oed di? Beth wyt ti’n hoffi? Beth wyt ti’n hoffi wneud/bwyta? Beth sy’n bod? Sut wyt ti?
ü  Complete welsh questionnaires using the above terms and graph the results.
·         Play ‘Loop the Loop’ practising illnesses.
·         Choose the correct illness for the animal.

Take photographs of each other and make a Power point of illnesses.
ü  Pupils to choose a farm animal of their choice and complete a zig-zag book with a brief introduction using phrases already learned and then write about their illnesses.  Introduce the vocabulary: paw, tail, teeth, horns etc.
·         Pupils to research characters that live under the sea and record notes in Welsh.
ü  Complete an Emotion Graph as a group/class/pair – Sut mae …. yn teimlo?
