Big Talk

Monday 13th October
This week we will be looking at our instructional writing based on caring for farm animals. Please can you spend this week talking about what is important to consider when you care for farm animals. The following may be useful when doing this.  We should:
* understand the animals’ physical and behavioural needs
·         knowing how to provide the correct diet
·         being able to recognise signs of injury and disease – this would mean checking the animals every day for sign of disease or illness
·         knowing how to prevent these and when to get veterinary help
·         knowing how to handle the animals correctly and safely
·          knowing how to carry out day-to-day tasks e.g. cleaning their shelter, providing clean water and food daily etc
·         provide enough space, the right type of land, housing and shelter, and things to keep them interested and let them behave normally
·         consider using the correct type of fencing – they can’t escape or be attacked by other animals
·         remember that most farm animals need to live in groups, which means keeping at least two animals of the same species which get on well together
·         Farm animals often need regular visits from a vet for things like vaccinations, health checks and emergency care
The children could talk about one farm animal in particular and discuss how they would make sure all of the above are met.
