Superheroes Invade Dosbarth Coala!

We hope you are relaxing and enjoying your half term. I just wanted to inform you of a few important messages about next term before we go back. We are pleased to tell you that our topic for this half term is SuperheroesThis project has an ICT focus and teaches children how to gather information from a range of sources and use a range of packages to draw, paint, animate and record sounds.  At the heart of this project children will write narrative and fantasy stories using a comic and storyboard format and develop additional skills in the use of speech marks and captions. Here is an overview of the activities:

Language, Literacy & Communication Skills
ü  Begin to write and sequence their own stories about superheroes.
ü  Create fantasy worlds and describe settings.
ü  Use storyboarding and other features of comics, such as speech and thought bubbles, text boxes, captions and illustration
ü  Read a range of comics and stories on the theme of superheroes.
ü  Hold a superhero dress morning! Who have they come as and why?  Explore the characteristics of their superheroes.  Begin to create character profiles using drawings, key words and phrases.
ü  Interview a real ‘superhero’ about their work.
ü

Personal & Social Development, Well-Being & Cultural Diversity
ü  Find out which aspects of school life the children would like a superhero to deal with e.g. bullying, litter dropping, road safety and friendship.
ü  SEAL Scheme – Getting on and Falling Out
ü  Explore a variety of social and moral issues such as bullying using circle time and talking partners. Compare the qualities of a superhero and villains and how each character might deal with the problem.
ü  Explore why they are special and talk about superheroes in their own family or community.
ü  Explore and listen to stories about religious figures e.g. Jesus and Moses.

Mathematical Development
ü  Describe and extend number sequences
ü  Count on and back in steps of any size
ü  Money and money problems
ü  Negative numbers
ü  Block graphs and pictograms
ü  3D Shapes and their properties

Physical Development

Creative Development
*  Learn how to draw and paint characters using graphical modelling.
*  Study the artist Andy Warhol and create images of superheroes based on this style.

Knowledge & Understanding of the World
ü  Learn about our ‘super senses’ and how they help us to avoid danger. Carry out practical science investigations to explore senses of touch, smell, sight, taste and hearing.  Record their scientific findings.
ü  Develop an understanding of the right types of food and diet for good health, make and eat a range of tasty snacks.
ü  Place characters in chronological order.  Make a superhero time line using film, reading materials and illustration to find out how things have changed over time.

Welsh Language Development
ü  Children role play different superheroes and villains and use
the phrases previously taught: Beth ydy dy enw di? Faint ydy dy oed di? Sut wyt ti? Beth wyt t’n hoffi wneud? Beth wyt ti’n gwisgo? Ble rwyt ti’n byw?
ü  Learn the new phrase ‘Wyt ti’n gallu …?’ and relate to superheroes actions.
ü  Role play scenes between superheroes and villains in police stations.
ü  Read simple poems about superheroes.
ü  Read simple welsh books based on superheroes.
ü  Learn to count to 100 in Welsh.
ü  Talk about the weather in the past tense.

There are also a few other messages attached to this that you need to be aware of over the next few weeks:

Home School Task – Half Term Needs to returned to school On Monday 18th Feb
Dosbarth Coala and Cangarw
In preparation for our new topic ‘Superheroes’ please could you complete the following:
·         Talk about what a superhero is: What do they do?  Look like? Eat? Do they have special powers?
·         Does a hero have to have special powers or a costume to be super?
·         Are they any superheroes in your family or community?  Who are they? What do they do? Why are they important?
·         Draw or write about a special person or superhero in your life.
This work will need to be brought back into school on the first Monday after half term and there will be prizes for the children who put in the most effort.  The results will be announced on our Superhero Day!
We have included a frame but feel free to get creative. You could make a collage, paint, use ICT or even place your superhero in a home-made frame.

Superhero Day - Thursday 21st February

We are holding a superhero dress day to ‘kick-start’ our new topic for the next half term.  Please come
dressed as your favourite superhero for that day.

Homework Task for Half Term
Your task is to prepare a three - five minute talk based on the following heading:

My New Superhero

Use photographs or other artefacts to help or even come dress up as your superhero. Some suggestions to talk about: their name, their appearance, what they eat, say do, their super powers etc. Be as creative as you can and remember there will be no right or wrong it will be your own hero!  Could it be a superhero to deal with bullying? Litter dropping?  Road safety? Friendship? We will listen to each others' presentations the second week back. I will send a list home on the first week back to let you know the particular day you will be doing your talk. Good Luck!

Dosbarth Coala Spelling Homework
The children in Dosbarth Coala will now be coming home with 5 words which they must learn to spell by the Friday.  These words are what we call in school ‘red words’.  They can’t be sounded out but must just be learnt.  It may be advisable to learn one or two of them a day. Every Friday we will do work based on these spellings in class.  The first five words will be sent home on Monday. The following week you will find the spellings for the week on the bottom of the Talk Homework.  Thanks for your continued support.  We hope that by working on the spellings both in and out of school the children will become confident with spelling these high frequency words.

As always if there is anything you are unsure of don't hesitate to ring or pop in to see me.

Many thanks
Mrs Howells
