Blwyddyn Newydd Dda!


I hope you have all had a fun-packed but relaxing holiday.  We are looking forward to hearing all about your Christmas on Wednesday. Don't forget to bring your collage for our Great Barrier Reef Themed toilets! Mrs Stevens and I can't wait to see them!


Our new topic for this term is HEROES AND VILLAINS - TRADITIONAL TALES.


Mrs James has already informed me that there is a letter on my chair from The Big Bad Wolf from the story 'Little Red Riding Hood' asking for our help!  He wants to investigate why wolves on always the villains in traditional tales. WOW - how exciting!


The topic will allow us to explore the following:
Language, Literacy & Communication
*Identify features of Traditional Tales
*Good/Bad Character Profiles – wanted posters
*Retelling of traditional tales and changing the ending
*Critical Literacy – Looking at a tale from a different character’s point of view e.g. the wolf
*Fortune Lines- Plot characters’ feelings
*Describe the setting of a traditional tale
Letter Writing to a character – Link with Personal and Social
*Write a non-chronological report about an event from a Traditional Tale
*Hot Seating characters from tales
*Interviews
*Drama – Freeze frames of particular scene from tales

Personal & Social Development, Well-Being & Cultural Diversity
*Citizenship through Traditional Tales – Children will discuss and learn about right and wrong, good and bad, 
fair and unfair, caring and inconsiderate e.g. Little Red Riding Hood –What are Red’s choices?, The Three 
Little Pigs – Can the wolf change his ways?
*Communicate and reflect on the decisions made in stories, situations or personally, suggesting alternative 
responses.

Mathematical Development
* Rehearse addition and subtraction facts
*Describe and extend number sequences
*Count on and back in steps of any size
*Odd/even numbers
*Recognise and find simple fractions
*Solve a given problem by collecting, sorting and organising information in simple ways.

Creative Development
*Design and make a cottage from a Traditional Tale using a net for the main walls and separate structure 
for the roof.
*Create their own simple compositions for a retelling of a traditional tale.

Knowledge & Understanding of the World
* What are the houses in tales made from? Sorting materials according to their properties
*Keep out the Villains – Plan and carry out an investigation to discover the best material for building a house 
in the woods
*Make sweet decorations for the Gingerbread House that involves heating and cooling
*Make bread for Red Riding Hood’s basket
*Sort human and natural features of the woods in some traditional tales
*Draw a simple map of the woods to show the route travelled by a character including a key, symbols and 
compass directions

Welsh Language Development
*Children role play characters from traditional tales and use the phrases: Beth ydy dy enw di? Faint ydy dy 
oed di? Sut wyt ti? Beth wyt t’n hoffi wneud? Beth wyt ti’n gwisgo? Ble rwyt ti’n byw?
*Produce ‘Who am I?’ books practicing the above phrases 
* Role play in our ‘Traditional Tales’ Estate Agent using the phrase: ‘Pa ……wyt ti eisiau?’
*Read simple welsh books based on traditional tales

As you can see it is going to be another busy and fun-packed term.  Feel free to talk about or research any 
of the above with your child or if you have resources that could assist us this term please let us know!

Homework will continue to be given out on a Monday (starting Monday 9th January) to be returned by the 
following Monday.  This is in addition to our Talk homework (starting Monday 9th January) which is also 
given out on a Monday in preparation for our Big Write session on the Friday (first writing session to start on 
Friday 13th January). PLEASE COULD READING BOOKS BE IN SCHOOL EVERY DAY!

PE will start next week.
